Education
If you are a foreign resident here in Turkey, your child’s education is free? All children including foreign nationals have the right to access basic education which is normally divided into 3 levels of 4 years each.
The education system’s organization is as follows:
2-3 years of optional pre-primary education (usually for children of ages between 3-5 years)
4 years of primary school (ilkogretim)
4 years of middle school
4 years of compulsory high school (lise)
University (optional)
There are three types of schools – Public, Private and International.
Currency
Turkey’s currency is the Yeni Turk Lira (New Turkish Lira, TRY). It was introduced in 2005 and is widely used. However, if you’ll be living or visiting in a tourist area, you will find shops and restaurants which also accept foreign currency. If you have Sterling, USD or EUR, you will most likely be able to use them. There are also many exchange bureaus for you to change your money.
The Turkish Healthcare System
If you plan to move to Turkey you will find that it is compulsory to be covered by healthcare.
You can opt for private healthcare or join Turkey’s Social Security Institution (SGK).
Driving in Turkey
If you are planning to move to Turkey and wish to bring your car, you need to be aware of the regulations and rules of bringing your car into the country. Driving in Turkey can be quite a chaotic experience. Turkey’s road traffic accidents are a big problem and in 2016, there were 1,185,128 accidents, 7,300 people killed and over 400,000 people injured.
If you need help or advice on any of the above topics one of our volunteers at The Foreign Citizens Advice Centre will be able to assist you.
