Welcome to Turkey

If you are considering moving to Turkey, as an expat you will observe a modern country rich in heritage and tradition. Understanding the ins and outs of everyday life in Turkey might take some time.

When you visit Turkey you will find that the people are extremely hospitable and even if you meet someone for the first time, you may well be invited into their home. Remember to take your shoes off as you will be offered a pair of slippers to use.

The Turks also love their football and one of the first questions you may be asked is “who is your favourite team”. It is common to hear fans after a successful match to drive around honking their horns while singing their teams song.  They are also very open and free when meeting people, even for the first time.  Do not be surprised if you get asked many personal questions about your life and do not take offence as this is a part of their culture.

Turks are extremely proud of their history and heritage. On Turkish public holidays, the Turkish Flag hangs proudly from windows, balconies and between street lamps. In fact the Turk’s really know how to have fun, with everyone joining in by attending performances and participating in traditional processions with flags and musical bands.

It can be a bit of a culture shock and you have to adapt to the Turkish way of living.  Day to day life is slower here than in Europe and you will need a lot of patience when it comes to getting anything done.

Even when language can be a problem, most people are very kind to foreigners and will go out of their way to help you with any problems.
